The Win 7 Ultimate laptop license is tied to that particular machine, legally. What you want to do is possible, but it is a lot of work, involves some Windows installation disk hacks, and involves breaking your Win 7 Ultimate end-user agreement (EULA). Again, all of these copies are fully licensed, I'm just moving one license to a new machine and putting a new license on an existing machine.ġ) Is this possible? This article seems to provide a way to do it, but I'm not sure it is legitimate and I don't want to hose my laptop trying it out.ģ) Is there a way to deactivate Windows 7 so that when I am installing to the new machine it will just work? I've heard that calling Microsoft for activation isn't that big of a hassle, but if there's an easy way to do just deactivate a particular install I'd rather just do that. I just want to change the versions in place and keep going. The catch: I don't want to reinstall and reconfigure the laptop.

What I'd like to do is install Ultimate on the new Sandy Bridge machine and turn my laptop into Home Premium. All of my machines satisfy the upgrade license requirements. In anticipation of my impending Sandy Bridge build this weekend I purchased a family pack of Windows 7 Home Premium to make sure I had enough licenses to go around. I'm currently running a licensed copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop.
